PRIVATISATION: Revisiting road privatisation in Mexico

The government seeks US$25bn from selling road concessions. The transport ministry announced on 4 March that it would auction rights to operate the current toll roads which are run by the Fideicomiso de Apoyo al Rescate Carretero (Farac). The government introduced private roads in the early 1990s, but the toll roads proved unpopular and when interest rates soared in the economic crisis of 1995, the operators went bust. The government renationalised 45 toll roads and four toll bridges in 1997.
